Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
