Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
