Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
